How to Check Engine Coolant

Most vehicles have a translucent expansion tank with MIN and MAX markings. You can usually check the level without opening the system.

Check coolant safely

  1. Park on level ground.
  2. Switch off the engine.
  3. Let the engine cool completely.
  4. Locate the coolant expansion tank.
  5. Check the fluid level against the markings.
  6. Add the correct coolant if the level is low.
